Chapter 21: White House

The Chairman of the Chinese government summoned Mark, the journalist in possession of important information, to his official residence. Mark was treated with an exceptional level of caution, which was reflected in the fact that he was assigned his own security detail. After discussing specific matters, the Chairman engaged in a video conference call with the heads of numerous other states. It was then that American presidential aide Percy managed to place a call to the Chairman of the Chinese government.

°»I°«m sure you are aware, but we ? the United States of America ? may have been going down the wrong path. However, I can°«t understand how things got to the point where President Hamilton himself was killed. Presently, we have a Vice-President who is prepared to carry out the wishes of the former President and we mustn°«t overlook the possibility that retaliatory acts will be undertaken. I called you because I am looking to obtain critical information.°…

The Chairman of the Chinese government spoke, °»It would seem that you are embroiled in a complicated situation. We are also in a similarly confusing position. Were you able to speak to the Vice-President?°…

°»Actually, I also harbor distrust of the Vice-President. This is why I decided to call you in hopes of confirming matters for myself. Were nuclear weapons used for a particular reason? I°«m looking to gather information because I feel that I must ascertain the situation expeditiously. If necessary, I feel that we must go so far as to seize power in a coup in order to stop the Vice-President. In connection with this, I believe that the journalist Mark is in China at the moment.°…

°»Mark is indeed here.°…

°»Does this mean that you°«ve been told certain things by Mark?°…

°»That is correct. He°«s told me everything. In order to put other countries on alert, I°«ve told their representatives about the Fusion Project subject to a pledge to not disclose this matter to the public, but perhaps someone caused this situation to arise from the outset. Perhaps that party was unable to stay silent after finding out about the fusion experiments being conducted on human subjects and the use of the disposal facilities on the failed subjects.°…

°»So, it really did happen as I had suspected, did it? But for the fusion experiments to extend beyond clones and be conducted on human subjects... Mr. Chairman, would it be possible for me to speak with Mark?°…

The Chairman of the Chinese government raised the palm of his hand upwards to indicate his approval of this request.

Mark then spoke with Percy, °»Mr. Percy, this is Mark.°…

°»Thank you, Mark. You did well. Perhaps this will allow me to atone for my sins. Your older brother Joey is right by my side.°…

°»Joey is alive!?°…

Joey then came on the line. He asked, °»Is that you Mark?°…

°»Joey!°…

°»Mark, it took a while but Martha and Lily are finally on their way over there thanks to the involvement of Mr. Percy. Please look after them when they arrive. I°«ve still got things to do with Mr. Percy here. I don°«t have much time to talk right now. Let°«s meet again and catch up. I°«ve got to hand the phone back to Mr. Percy.°…

Percy continued his conversation with the Chairman of the Chinese government.

°»I suppose that the Vice-President is now very nervous about what is happening. If you were to engage in suspicious actions, I can°«t predict how he might react. I°«ve got a few exceptional people around me that I trust and that can lead Colonel Joey. We can work together to gain control of the White House and place the Vice-President under arrest, but I can°«t guarantee that we will succeed. When you consider the fact that we can prevent an unreasonable missile attack if the White House is stormed by domestic forces, it could be an effective course of action. For this reason, I ask that you maintain an amicable tone with the Vice-President if you get a chance to speak with him.°…

°»I°«ve already spoken of this matter with the heads of other states. One could very well wonder whether someone might have carelessly spoken of the top-secret Fusion Project, thereby leading someone to launch the nuclear attacks to ascertain weaknesses. Since we also lack information on the nuclear attacks that occurred, we intend to respond accordingly if asked by the Vice-President. In any case, are you capable of bringing the recklessness in your country under control on your own?°…

°»Thank you for your understanding. For our part, we will carry out what we now need to do.°…

°»With a few more outstanding men involved in your endeavor, would you be able to guarantee success?°…

°»The more good men we have, the better off our chances are, I believe.°…

°»Shall we lend you some more outstanding men to provide assistance?°…

At this point, Joey interjected himself into the conversation. °»Mr. Chairman, I am grateful for your kindness. However, with all due deference to you, I assume that the auxiliary forces that you are offering consist of the best men for this kind of job but our situation is a little different. I believe that regular ground forces would find themselves in a bit over their heads, unfortunately.°…

The Chairman of the Chinese government responded immediately, °»Colonel Joey, you have nothing to worry about. Allow us to harness our satellites ahead of time and provide you with whatever support we can extend. Please let us know the location.°…

Indicating that he was asked by order of the Vice-President to free Joey and his friends, Percy managed to extricate Joey and his friends from the isolated prison and furnish them with four armored weapons, as well as supply vehicles.

Chapter 22: Oppression

The Vice-President was mired in confusion in the face of sudden events. Things became so unpredictable that war might break out at any moment. He bore a heavy psychological burden as a result of assuming control of the concealed information that had been passed to him from the President. Unable to share the truth with Percy, he was torn between a need to become stronger and an inability to secure cooperation. At this juncture, he realized that he was all alone.

Lashing out at everyone around him and tearing out his hair in frustration, the Vice-President was struck by the fact that he could not carry on as usual.

Chapter 23: Maneuvering

Percy patched a call through to the Secretary of Defense, who was visiting an Air Force facility. °»Mr. Secretary, as you can see, we°«ve got a bit of a crisis on our hands.°…

°»Indeed. It can probably be traced back to the Project.°…

Pretending to have known for a long time about the Project, as mentioned by the Secretary of Defense, Percy continued, °»The Vice-President is saying that there is a possibility that there was a leak and that something may happen here in the States as well.°…

°»Well, listen... He sounded quite overwhelmed in a phone call I had with him earlier.°…

°»There are a number of ambassadors and envoys headed to the White House. The Vice-President has indicated that they are to be admitted.°…

°»Understood. I°«ll make the arrangements.°…

°»Mr. Secretary, what is your present location?°…

°»I°«ll be heading off to the White House.°…

°»I°«ll be waiting, sir.°…

Chapter 24: Set in motion

Several hours later, dispatched Chinese reinforcements arriving on the scene relayed a message to Percy. °»We°«ll be arriving at the destination area within one hour. In order to link our communication channels together, please pass this information on to your members. Also, please send a comprehensive map of the area in which the White House is included.°…

°»Got it. I°«ll make the arrangements. We°«re also scheduled to arrive within an hour.°…

°»All right.°…

°»Let°«s reconfirm. The Vice-President is to be seized prior to entering the White House. There is to be no killing or wounding for any other purpose. I°«d like it to be understood that you are here to provide back-up assistance in case of an emergency.°…

°»That is understood.°…

Percy was suddenly contacted by the chief of staff of the Chinese military. °»Mr. Percy, I must unfortunately let you know that the Vice-President has just now entered the White House. Shall we adopt a new strategy?°…

°»Your information is correct, is it?°…

°»We will send you our satellite photos and you can see for yourself.°…

Percy checked these photos on his laptop and buried his face in one of his hands.

°»There are many staffers in the White House who are out of the loop. I°«d like to avoid involving them in this as much as possible. And if we make one misstep, I can only imagine that we°«ll be treated as traitors by the Vice-President. If that were to happen, a clash may be unavoidable.°…

At that moment, an explosion occurred inside the White House, followed by two or three other blasts.

As the sound of gunfire rang out, a swarm of staffers fled from the White House. Prototype soldiers and other combatants bubbled out from inside the building like a pot boiling over and proceeded to mercilessly slaughter most of these staffers and evacuees using their weapons and special skills.

From their outer appearances, they were certainly monsters. Some used wings to fly, others resembled oak trees of more than four meters in height, and still others discharged needles that looked like sea urchin spines from their bodies. There were monsters ensconced in hard crab-like shells and a host of other monsters that could easily give the impression that one had been whisked away into a video game-inspired world.

Just as a loud, strange sound was emitted, the prototype soldiers fell silent. Ten Sakura units emerged from inside the White House and took charge from positions in front of the prototype soldiers.

Although Joey and his friends could not grasp what they had just witnessed, they felt that the situation called for them to put a stop to the actions of these prototype soldiers. Despite misgivings about putting the Vice-President at risk, Percy told Joey to attack out of necessity.

Joey and his three friends commenced their attack, but the distance they had to first cover prevented them from being noticed by their opponents. It was then that Percy conveyed a message to the four men.

°»As a government official, I haven°«t heard anything about the existence of any military officials controlling these Sakura units. What°«s more, if there were any such military officials, there would be no way for me to know about the prototype soldiers. In other words, I can only conclude that these Sakura units are being operated by prototype soldiers. I urge you to engage them with caution.°…

Chapter 25: Betrayal

Feeling anxious about the possibility that these problems were spreading beyond the national borders of the United States, Percy inquired with the Chairman of the Chinese government.

°»A troubling situation has arisen, in that clashes are occurring at the White House. It appears that this can°«t be helped. Could it be that something has happened to a party outside the United States?°…

°»I don°«t believe that there are any troubling situations affecting anyone besides the White House.°…

°»I see.°…

Percy experienced only a slight feeling of relief. Just then, a communications buzzer went off and he pressed the answer button without checking to see who was on the other end.

°»Mr. Percy, what is the meaning of this?°…

°»Mr. Secretary, I°«m also in the dark.°…

In the course of the conversation, Percy verified that a helicopter was flying in the vicinity of the White House. The Secretary of Defense was ascertaining whether a security convoy program to be set in motion whenever abnormal circumstances arose at the White House had been put into operation. This was a measure designed to protect the life of the President at all costs.

°»Mr. Percy, are you by any chance a traitor?°…

°»What the hell are you saying?°…

The Secretary of Defense climbed out of his helicopter and stood before the prototype soldiers and the others with a measure of reserve. He raised one arm at his side to prevent them from proceeding ahead of him. In response, the prototype soldiers and the others stepped back behind the Secretary. The Secretary of Defense knew how to keep them under control.

Those present at the site watched this scene with a sense of dread. The Secretary of Defense turned back and breathed a sigh of relief upon realizing that the prototype soldiers and the others were following his orders.

The Secretary then resumed his conversation with Percy. °»Cease your use of force immediately! You are all traitors!°…

At just that moment, the Secretary of Defense was struck by a missile launched by a prototype soldier operating a Sakura unit, whereupon he and his helicopter exploded in a ball of flames. Like the call of a trumpet to battle, this incident marked the start of a battle pitting Joey and his friends against the prototypes.

Chapter 26: Convergence

Joey, Simon, Tyler, and Joseph ? four brothers in arms ? stood against an enemy of overwhelming numbers. While their training certainly came into play, they really needed to replenish their supply of ammunition.

Simon turned to Joseph, who was struggling with an inefficient shot, and exclaimed, °»Aim accurately. Conserve your ammunition as much as possible.°…

Joey spoke up, °»Leave the small fries to Joseph. The three of us will take care of the Sakura units.°…

However, even when Joey, Simon and Tyler joined forces to focus on taking out the Sakura units, they were unable to do so with ease. The overwhelming numbers arrayed against them placed them at a disadvantage.

It was then that Chinese military helicopters swooped in from the rear. The commander of the Chinese Special Forces introduced himself. °»I°«m sorry we°«re late. Allow us to join this fight.°…

Believing that their new friends might be of some help, Joey, Simon, Tyler and Joseph extended a warm welcome while staying focused on the battle in front of them.

Thanks to the offensive firepower of the Chinese forces ? which rivaled or surpassed that being wielded by Joey and his friends ? the tide of the battle turned. This was when Joey and his three friends finally took real notice of the Chinese Special Forces in their midst.

They were riding in a new type of armored weapon that differed from the Sakura units. A total of five such weapons were in use. Their four-legged design ? in contrast to a two-legged design ? facilitated stable movements and rapid mobility. Chinese characters spelling out YANGTZE were written on their large shields.

The commander of the Chinese Special Forces said, °»It°«s nice to meet you.°…

Joey responded, °»I didn°«t know you had such a machine in your arsenal. How do you read those characters written on your shields?°…

°»YANGTZE. It°«s the largest river in China. We°«re familiar with your units. They°«re called Sakura units and they°«re produced by the Satake Group, are they not?°…

°»So you already knew about these in China, did you?°…

°»Long before the Sakura units were produced by the Satake Group, we had developed armored weaponry. Two of the units added to our outfit are operated wirelessly. Indeed, I°«ll bet that they can outperform the Sakura units you boys are riding in right now.°…

Remote control by gamers.

The normally taciturn Tyler spoke up, °»You°«re pretty confident.°…

Suddenly, Joseph°«s Sakura unit and a YANGTZE unit exploded with no warning. In order to figure out what was going on, Joey patched himself through to everyone, °»What happened? What°«s going on, boys?!°…

Sensing that something was wrong from the tone of the conversation, Percy asked Joey for a situational update, °»Something happening there, Joey?°…

°»Two friendlies suddenly blew up. I have no idea from what direction they were attacked.°…

As if recalling something, Percy replied in an anxious tone, °»This is probably the work of stealth fighters, likely in the form of transparent prototype soldiers.°…

°»Now we°«ve got to deal with that, too?°…

Joey issued an order to all units, °»Apply thermographic imaging to half of your monitor. Stealth monsters are your enemy.°…

Despite being surrounded by prototype soldiers, Joey and his friends shook them off to seek refuge inside the White House. They continued subverting the occasional prototype soldier that attacked and then split up to search for the Vice-President. After awhile, Percy began to sense that something was not quite right when the Vice-President remained missing. At that point, Percy wondered whether the map of the White House that he had distributed was in fact a fake. He spoke to Joey, °»Listen, the map of the White House I sent to you guys may be a fake. Accordingly, you may not find the Vice-President by referring to the map. Make sure you°«re safe and keep looking.°…

Joey answered, °»Roger that.°…

Chapter 27: Exuviae

Despite searching the inside of the White House, which was strewn with the remains of prototype soldiers, the Vice-President was nowhere to be found.

Joey and his friends gathered inside a spacious room within the White House, where they came across what they at first believed was a patterned circular adornment of some sort on the floor. Upon laterally sliding what was in fact a manhole-like lid measuring approximately three meters across, they uncovered a hole.

The Vice-President emerged from the hole. Holding a small bottle of whiskey in one hand, he walked flat-footed to where Joey and his friends were positioned.

Unable to withstand the pressures of the situation in which he had found himself, the Vice-President became transformed into a completely different person and consequently went to pieces. Joey and his friends were immediately cognizant of the fact that the Vice-President was not in a normal frame of mind and believed that he was even capable of committing suicide if they made a single misstep.

Joey chose to avoid the risk of approaching the Vice-President and instead spoke to him through his loudspeaker, °»Mr. Vice-President, it°«s still dangerous here. We°«re asking you to stay put since we°«re going to take you into protective custody.°…

Oblivious to this message, the Vice-President continued to advance toward Joey and his friends. Suddenly, the apparent corpse of a prototype soldier stirred and then beheaded the Vice-President while emitting a death cry.

To Joey, the Vice-President, unable to terminate his own life, chose to proceed toward the location of his final moment.

Chapter 28: Trials

Several months later, Japan and the United States remained unable to recover from the chaos that had ensued. The perpetrator of the nuclear attacks was still at large. Traces of what had occurred could still be found throughout the world.

Science was the trigger that led to these nuclear attacks. In their wake, people around the globe became fearful of what it had wrought, anxious at the possibility that a war engulfing the entire world could develop. These circumstances forced people to engage in discussions with one another.

Mark was one of these people in that he was compelled to think about what had happened. He learned about the philosophy of the late President Hamilton from Percy, who explained, °»He viewed science as a means of surviving in new developed areas away from an Earth that could not be expected to exist forever. He believed that humans needed to harness the power of science to step into the realm of the heavens, despite the profane nature of such a vision. Humans have despoiled the ecosystem through environmental pollution and have been responsible for the extinction of many species. If there were a DNA bank, clones could be used to revive long-lost life forms as a way of redressing our failings. Even if a natural disaster were to strike, humans could overcome the resulting calamity by using fusion DNA like a vaccine of sorts. By building a society based on the Neo Project, we would no longer have to contend with the twin horrors of chaos and inequality. Until such time, America would have to maintain global order by way of the application of military force. In the meantime, the power of science would lead the way to a better future for mankind.°…

Many people had long questioned the fixed ideas held to date by the United States. Mark engaged in discussions on numerous topics with other journalists and specialists.

°»Why does a certain country feel that it needs to maintain order through military means when it was never asked to do so?°…

°»If you insist on affirming justice and righteousness, you should put an end to all wars. This is because they become instruments of evil for oppressors.°…

°»Science is just another tool. It is humans who choose to use science to fashion weapons or to aspire to become gods.°…

°»In the first place, there°«s a limit to the applicability of the high-sounding ideas spouted by developed nations.°…

°»Will humankind head toward a form of apoptosis (programmed cell death) triggered by a thinking program?°…

°»Humans ? who are derived from the same DNA and who were split from the same soul ? seized the forbidden fruit of science, which poisoned our minds and led to the outbreak of wars.°…

°»If there were a global king as chosen by all of humanity, the walls of good and evil along national borders could be transcended and conflicts would be no more.°…

°»You may be right. Sports can be played thanks to the presence of referees and umpires.°…

While gazing at the ocean from his vantage point amid the spectacular natural setting from which humankind came forth, Mark prepared his report on his laptop.

Will peace truly arrive following the dominant role played by certain countries in terms of the wealth, power and order of humanity? The question of whether science and other means are to be harnessed to wage or refrain from waging conflicts is a trial that must be undergone collectively by people everywhere. Human beings cannot be permitted to conveniently set aside the outstanding issues that are posed in this respect. This is because the answer to this question is sought on earth, in nations and within all such relevant environments.

A glance at Mark°«s website reveals his thoughts.

If the various histories and environments corresponding to human existence throughout time are seen to shape and grant continuity to our lives, it is as if something akin to DNA also exists at the core of information. However, such informational DNA is currently set apart by state players at a national level. We find ourselves at present at a juncture where we must extract ourselves from a matrix of informational DNA that has been perpetuated within different environments. This is because an inability to fuse such informational DNA will place humans on the path toward apoptosis, the same fate that otherwise awaits the global environment.
I can°«t help feeling that we always have and will always continue to confront this central issue of our existence.

I established this website in order to call on the world to engage in fusion programs that should be undertaken by humankind as well as to help people everywhere contribute to the building of a framework of subjectivity to which all humankind should aspire.
