| The following information is for your growth. Educate yourself so that you will know. Often we are a part of the demolition crew rather than the construction crew, without being aware. Check yourself. Have you been a help, or have you contributed to the decline of the African-American Male? |
| I am on the record as one who disagrees with aspects of Dr. William "Bill" Cosby's 2004 message to African-Americans. He made a simple assumption about a situation that is larger than life and that has been at least two generations in the making. Our boys are being lost at an early age. Studies show that African-American males begin their school career in the kindergarten through third grades at a point equal to their counterparts. Something "happens" and we start to lose them in the fourth grade. My own experiences have taught me that it is imperative that we check on our boys as much as possible and as often as we can. There are situations brewing within the classroom setting that are not conducive to their growth spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and intellectually. Don't assume as parents that your child is getting the best education that he can get. Learn how to communicate with your child's teacher so that the teacher will understand your concerns If you need someone to help you advocate for your child, don't be afraid to ask for help. |
