Lake Charles Native Will Sign Copies of Novel April 8

Lake Charles native Deborah Clawson Johnson will be signing copies of her novel, "The Narrow Journey," from 3 p.m. -5 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at Books-A-Million, 2934 Ryan Street.

The novel tells the story of a young Cajun girl named Lucie Trosclair growing up in the late 19th century Louisiana.

It is set in the fictional town of Barrineau, Louisiana, somewhere in Southwest Louisiana. The story tell sof how Lucie survives the narrow journey to adulthood by sheer determination, quick wit, and a wicked sense of humor.

Being a particularly unattractive girl only serves to whet her appetite, but survive she does.

Johnson was born and raised in Lake Charles. A graduate of LaGrange High School, she attended McNeese State University before moving to Columbia, S.C. with her husband in 1972.

There she completed a degree in Art Education at the University of South Carolina in 1974 and has since earned a M.Ed. plus 30 hours of post graduate work in Early Childhood Education.

Johnson has been writing steadily for the last 15 years. She has had work published in several local and regional newspapers and magazines in South Carolina and has won several awards for her work, including the South Carolina Arts Commission's Fiction Project Award in 1991 and 1993 and Ohio's Green River Writer's Competition for Short Fiction in 1994. In April of 2000, she was awarded third place for the Novel/Novella at the Sandhills Writer's Conference in Augusta, Georgia.

Johnson lives in Columbia with her husband Jim and their two daughters, Kirsten and Jessica. In addition to writing, Johnson teaches at Bethel-Hanberry Elementary in Richland School District Two.

"The Narrow Journey," is her first novel.
