Spring has sprung and I'm getting alot of questions about pasture management. So here are some tips.
1. When trying to guess how much pasture space you need, consider 1 acre for each horse. If you have more than 2 or three consider 2 acres for the first horse and 1 acre for each horse additional.
2. Make sure pasture has decent quality forage. Seed every few years with a good grass/clover mix. More oftten if you notice that the pasture has been over used.
3. Rotate your pasture space even if you have limited space. Move horses off of an area when the grass is chewed down to about two inches let grow for as long as possible. Before moving horses back on,mow fields(to 4-6 inches) and use rake to spread manure.
4. Section off a small paddock or area for turn out during the muddy season and let that area rest until mid summer if you have the resources.
Good Luck and green pastures to you all .
