Ruby Throated Hummingbirds are 3- 31/2 inches long. The male has a forked tail and a iridesenct throat. Females have a blunt tail and is grey-white below. Both have metallic green heads and backs. Voice: They utter high pictch squeaks and makes a buzzing sound when it flies. Habitat: Gardens and suburban yards with trees. Range: Southeast, Mid-West and parts of Canada. Nest: The Female builds a nest of small twigs and uses spider web silk to attach them together. 6-50 feet above ground. Lined with plant down. Lays about 2 white eggs the size of navy beans. Female incubates the eggs for 14-16 days and the young leave about 3 weeks later. Food: Mainly flower nectar and small insects and spiders. To attract: Plant colorful flowers such as Coumbine, Delphinium, Foxglove, Snap dragons, Zinnia and Nasturtium. They are also attracted by sugar water in a hummingbird feeder. Recipie for sugar water: 4 parts water and 1 part sugar.
