Amerks ship off goalie Plante, 3 others to ECHL
Rochester Democrat & Chronicle
Rookie goalie Tyler Plante and three others were assigned on Tuesday to the Florida Everblades by the Rochester Americans.
Defensemen Franklin MacDonald and Jordan Henry and forward Adam Taylor also were sent to the Everblades of the ECHL.
Plante did not play in the first three American Hockey League regular-season games.
Because two NHL teams stock the roster, the Amerks will have one goalie from each. Adam Dennis is property of the Buffalo Sabres and David Shantz is under contract to the Florida Panthers.
Amerks coach Randy Cunneyworth opted to keep Shantz, a second-year pro, over Plante.
"Shantz is a little more mature and disciplined in his work habits," Cunneyworth said. "He's had a year pro under his belt already and I think he knows what kind of work is necessary.
"I don't want to take anything away from Plante, but being a pro a year earlier has put Shantz marginally ahead at this point."
Dennis played the first two games, a 6-4 home win over Syracuse and a 4-1 loss at Toronto. Plante lost 3-2 in overtime to Hamilton on Sunday.
A second-round draft pick of the Florida Panthers in 2005, Plante was 30-14-9 with a 2.71 goals-against average last season with the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings.
Just as the Amerks had one goalie more than they need, the Amerks also started the season with nine defensemen and will usually dress only six for games. MacDonald and Henry sat out last weekend's games. Taylor played in all three games, scoring the only goal in Saturday's 4-1 loss at Toronto.
The reassignments leave the Amerks with 23 players on the roster. They play at Hamilton at 7:30 p.m. Friday (the start time will be closer to 7:50 because of pregame ceremonies).
