AILMENTS
WOUNDS- Check how deep the wound appears to be. If muscle tissue is
visable get your rat to the vet within six hours or the skin will
begin to die. If the wound is shallow clean it well and place
iodine on it.
BROKEN LEG - There is not much that can be done for your pet. The bone will
heal, while not perfect your rat will be able to use the leg again.
COLDS- Symptoms - In general they will have a hunched appearance and red
discharge from the eyes and nose. (This looks like blood but, it is
the colouration of the discharged mucus.) The rat will also sneeze
and wheeze.
First, Take the sick rat away from the other rats. Keep it somewhere
where it can be a little warmer than normal and give it plenty to
drink. If not treated quickly it can turn into pneumonia. This is
detected by heavy breathing and a rapid weight loss. Get it to the
vet as soon as possible.
EAR INFECTIONS - When your rat has an ear infection it will hold its head to
one side and walk around in circles. At worst your rat will just
stand up and fall right back over. Cefadrops given orally
should help your rat. In most cases there is no way to
completely get rid of it and your rat will show symptoms for the
rest of its life.
EYE INFECTION - This will be shown be a clear discharge around the eye.
Tetracycline cream placed on the eye twice a day can clear the
infection. Cataracts, where the eye turns grey, occurs in older
rats and this can not be treated.
HEATSTROKE - Your rat will be lying down in the bottom of the cage panting
and eyes wide open staring. Take the rat to a cool place and sponge
it down with cool water.
These are not cure alls for your pet rat. If you have any doubt about what
is wrong with your rat please take it to the vet who can give you much more than this page can.
