Beauty is a gift. And all of us without exception, has been gifted with beauty, in one form or another. The same way that we have to discover our spiritual gifts, that we have to work at it, develop it, experiment, be daring, courageous in stepping out and using it, that we have to listen to advice or seek advice from others- the same is true with this gift of our bodies and our face. We are all of us different, with different gifts. The same way that our attitude towards developing our spiritual gifts should be because we want to do God's work well, and not because we want to be important- so to with our physical attributes. We want to look our best because we want to do God's work, we want to be the best servant of the Lord we can be using all the gifts God has given us- and not because we want to attract attention to ourselves or because we want to be better than others. And so just like it takes time and work and a positive attitude to develop our spiritual gifts, be prepared also to spend some time and to have to work at becoming "beautiful" . It's not magic. In this file you will find tips about eating right, exercising, sleeping well, taking care of our body, skin and hair, make-up, and wardrobe. But first, why should we care about how we look?
In Matthew 22:39 we read Love your neighbor as yourself. It is clear here that to be able to love others, we must love ourselves first. And to love ourselves in the best way, and not in a vain way, we must know ourselves, we must have a true and unvarnished understanding of who we are. In the bible, the women invariably described themselves as " the daughter of..." or " your maidservant" or as in Mary's case, she called herself "the handmaid of the Lord" . While on the surface we may identify ourselves by our name and address, our job, our family, we can only " love ourselves" when we really know and accept ourselves as we are. We must LOOK at ourselves. In Psalm 139: 14-16, the psalmist says: " I praise thee, for thou art fearful and wonderful, wonderful are thy works! Thou knowest me right well, my frame was not hidden from thee, When I was being made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the earth. Thy eyes beheld my unformed substance; in thy book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there were none of them."
Here we see that the psalmist acknowledges that he is a wonderful creation of the Lord, not only as a spiritual being, but also as a physical being. In the Bible there are many descriptions of women. Sarai, the wife of Abraham, is beautiful to behold, the daughters of Job are fair, Abigail in the Book of Samuel was of good understanding and beautiful. In 1 Corinthians 6: 19,20 it says, Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God ? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. So we not only have to glorify God in the way we act and speak and think, but also in the way we look. We have to impose discipline on our lives as befitting daughters of our Lord, our King. To glorify God in our bodies.
Just as we desire to have order in our prayer time, our relationships, our speech , our service, our family, so do we desire to have order in our grooming, in our appearance , in our wardrobe. We want to be more aware of the person who God made us to be, accept who we are and exercise ourselves to be pleasing to God, to ourselves and t o others. We hope to cover in this file both the basics of good health and the basics of beauty. I am going to go back to our comparison to spiritual gifts and say that before we can develop our spiritual gifts , we have to feed the soul. We have to have a relationship with God. Or else using your spiritual gifts when we do not have a good relationship with the Lord, which is possible, and has been done- will make you a false prophet, a fake healer. You will be someone who is doing good, but will be what Jesus called whitewashed tombs. In other words, beautiful and attractive on the outside, but basically rotten on the inside. So before we talk about enhancing our beauty, we have to feed our bodies correctly, we have to treat our bodies correctly. For example, we have to go to the dentist, how often? Twice a year at the very least, or more often when needed. We have to have medical check ups, we have to exercise and get enough rest and sleep.
