| AMEY'S BREWERY This was established about 1878 by Thomas Amey, a dairy farmer and condensed milk manufacture. In 1817 it was owned by Miss Elizabeth Amey. It was bought by Whitbread and Co in June 1951 and closed down soon afterwards. W & R LUKER BREWERY The brewery was established before 1859 by Robert Crafts. In 1873 it was leased to John and Robert Luker and sol;d to them in 1880. From 1900 it traded as William and Robert Luker. It was purchased by Strong & Co of Romsey in 1934. The brewery buildings were badly damaged by fire in that year. The brewey tower and chimney were unsafe and had to be demolished WEEKS & CO. William Weeks was a brewer in The Square, Petersfield in the early 1900's. The company was bought by George Gale andCo of Horndean around 1910. JAMES HARRIS James Harris was a beer retailer in Sheep Street between 1800 and 1895. He also sold mineral waters, as Codds bottles with his name on have been found. AUBREY COMPTON He was a mineral water manufacturer in College Street from about 1905 to 1913. HOUNSOME Thomas Hounsome bought the business from Compton in 1913. Thomas died in 1920 and Ida carried on the business throughout the 2nd World War. In the 1920's Hounsome took over Fenn's of Farnham and the business continued to prosper through the 2nd World war, eventually being sold to Hartridges in 1965. WILLIAM PASSINGHAM He is listed as a mineral water manufacturer in Chapel Street from 1889 to 1903. These dates coincide with the early years of the Portsmouth Mineral Water Co. and he is recorded as the manager. Hence the most likely explanation is that the Petersfield shop was a branch of the Portsmouth Mineral Water Co. CHRISTOPHER JOHN JAMES CRASSWELLER He seems to have been a grocer, tallow chandler, soap boiler, earthenware dealer, wine and spirit merchant and brewer, from around 1823 to 1880, in the Spain - an area of Petersfield. GEORGE AND ALEXANDER COULTHARD Wine and spirit merchants in the High Street from around 1888 to 1912. |
