Arrangements finalised for the March club dinner. This will be in lieu of the March meeting and so there will not be a report for next month.

On the finds table tonight. John has been digging and he unearthed the printed pot PULTICINE, SUPERSEDES POULTICES, ANTISEPTIC, ANTIPHLOGISTIC, OPPENHEIMER SON & CO LTD, LONDON. It was thought that the word Antiphlogistic was just a made up name just to sell the product, but it actually means ' an agent that counteracts inflammation and fever'. He also dug the little OTTO OF ROSE COLD CREAM pot. His third piece of printed stoneware was bought on Ebay, STONE SALVE FOR RHEUMATISM, GOUT, NEURALGIA, SCIATIC. USED EXTERNALLY ONLY. An unusual selection of pots.

John also dug the Tolley bottle. Tolley were known for their bottled ales. The interesting part about this bottle is the internal screw stopper. It has the words Tolley patent on top. The stopper is longer than normal ones and the body just above the thread tapers in slightly. The inside of the top of bottle also tapers in slightly, so when the stoppper is screwed in the tapered bit aids the sealing process.

His final find was the LONG &CO, BREWERS, SOUTHSEA ginger beer. Not the most eyecatching of bottles but still good to dig a ginger occasionally.

Mick bought up a bulk load of bottles and among them was this pristine condition half pint amber WARNERS SAFE NERVINE, LONDON. One to keep for the collection.

Also in the bulk lot was this printed pot EXTRACT OF MALT. A DESSERTSPOONFUL TO TABLESPOONFUL WITH OR IMMEDIATELY AFTER FOOD. ARMY & NAVY CO-OP SOCIETY LTD, VICTORIA ST, SW.  Not one we have seen before and unusual that it doesn't have the A & N logo on it.

ALTON BOTTLE FAYRE

SUNDAY MARCH 20th 2011

The evenings competition was for two bottles marked with the word POISON. There were 5 entries but unfortunately only got a picture of the first one.

This was won by Mick with his amber TIPPERS FOR ANIMALS POISON and the rare round black glass POISON.

Dave came second.
