I have never experienced any sign of hearing what I have been tracking, but
have found that by putting your ear to the ground, and looking in the direction
of movement of what you are tracking, many tracks appear that were not visible
from the upright position.
Did that animal lose you in the pine nettles? Try this.
Go back to where you know a good track is and put your ear to the ground
in the direction the animal was moving. Look along the surface and you should
be able to see what looks like a series of shadowy craters. This is the
indention that the animal makes in the nettles.
Normal movement is the path of least resistance.
