Which way is North

How did he know which way was north at noon?

Find a twig about a foot long and stick it in the ground.
Basically , with a stick standing straight up in the ground, it will cast a shadow.
If you mark , somehow, the tip of where the shadow ends, this will be your
west pointer. Wait for an hour , the end of the shadow will move. It will be
slight, maybe 2.00" or so depending on the height of your initial stick , but it will move.
By marking the new end of the shadow you will now have your east pointer.
With the left foot on the first marker, and the right foot on the second marker,
you will be facing north.

If you have brought along a map, shoving the north edge of the map up against
the two smaller twigs will give you an even better
idea as to where you are. Terrain maps can be gotten from the forest rangers
