Common Asthma Triggers

Below is a list of common asthma triggers. They have all been linked to asthma but one may not bother a given asthmatic as much as another. Please also remember that the effects of triggers are cumulative, which means that it may not bother you as a singular event, but many events compounded will.

1. Changes in the weather or cold air
2. Dust
3. Insect Allergen (Roach and Mite Allergen)
4. Strong fumes and odors
5. Harsh Detergents
6. Food Allergen (Most common food allergies include dairy and chocolate and wheat)
7. Grass-related Foods (Chamomille, Soy, and like products often cause attacks in those allergic to grass)
8. Exercise
9. Environmental Pollutants
10. Emotional Extremes
11. Smoke
12. Pollen (grasses, trees and weeds)
13. Animal secretions (Saliva, Dander)
14. Molds
15. Respiratory Infections
16. Heredity
17. Hormonal Changes (Women tend to be more prone to Asthma attacks during Menstruation)
18. NSAIDS - 10% of asthmatics have attacks that are triggered by Tylenol, Motrin and some Arthritis Medication
19. Alcohol - wine in particular, seems to trigger nighttime asthma
20. Sulfides and Sulfites - preservatives found in luncheon and processed meats often trigger asthma
