A reclusive historical novelist, Jennifer Drake spent her life recording her dreams of Arthurian and other adventures and turned them into a writing career. Now, she lives her own adventures as the modern day incarnation of Lady Pendragon. Pulling the sword Caliburn (the Sword of Purity) from the stone recovered from Mars, this lineal descendant of Guinevere and heir to a Messianic blood line inadvertantly plunged the present day world into an apocalyptic Dark Age with the return of magic and its devastating effect on modern society. The survivors of this armaggedon gether around Jennifer's camp to offer aid and support to her cause. Creatures of myth and legend have returned to populate the world, some wreak havok while others, like the dragon Tiamat ally themselves with Jennifer and her band. With the help of Merlin and other survivors she battles Morgana and her army of zombies, who are wantonly murdering all life they come across.

Seemingly possessed at times by the spirits of her ancestors and the sword, Jennifer Drake is empowered with skills she would not normally have and a resolute determination to fulfill the will of the Pendragon. Confused and torn by her own religious beliefs and the death of so many, she tries to come to terms with what she has become but wonders if her actions hurt more that help those around her.
