At Sunrise

Beaks and bright water;

the sun’s first light.

Death comes quickly

in a feathery plunge.

Everywhere the glint of silver;

golden streak on rippling bay.

Soft calls from afar,

gurgling surf, damp boulders.

Again the swift wings;

a death unforeseen.

Miracle of nature,

beautiful and cruel,

depending on your point of view.
