Past Prayers of The Day
September 2001

September 30, 2001

The shining earth with its circling waters;
In splendor established the sun and moon
As lights to illuminate the land of men;
Fairly adorning the fields of earth
With leaves and branches; creating life
In every creature that breathes and moves.

- From "Beowulf," Author Unknown, Translated by Charles W. Kennedy

Special Addition: A Prayer Sent To Me For Publication

Odin, All father, wisest of gods, send wisdom to those in the heart of our recent tragedy that they know who to take vengeance on before too many innocents are hurt.
Tyr, god of Justice, bring swift and proper justice on the evil doer who has brought this atrocity to our nation. Make sure this person or persons truly pay for what they have done. Death is too merciful for this person. But in the end you must do what you must do.
Hail!
- Gothi Leonard Hill, D.D.

Keep alert,
Stand firm in your faith;
Be corageous,
Be strong,
Let all that you do
Be done in love.

- I Corinthians 16

September 28, 2001

May the light around us guide our footsteps,
And hold us fast to the best and
Most righteous that week seek.

May the darkness around us nurture our dreams,
And give us rest so that we may give ourselves
To the work of our world.

Let us seek to remember the wholeness of our lives,
The weaving of light and shadow in this great and
Astonishing dance in which we move.

- Kathleen McTigue

September 26, 2001

An inexhaustible good nature is one of the most precious gifts of heaven,
spreading itself like oil over the troubled sea of thought,
and keeping the mind smooth and equable in the roughest weather.

- Washington Irving

September 25, 2001

Darkness cannot drive out darkness;
Only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate;
Only love can do that.

- Martin Luther King, Jr.

September 23, 2001

If we agree to love,
there is no disagreement that can do us any injury,
but if we do not,
no other agreement can do us any good.
Let us endeavor to keep the unity of the spirit
in the bonds of peace.

- Hosea Ballou

September 22, 2001

For all who see God,
May God go with you.

For all who embrace life,
May life return your affection,

For all who seek a right path,
May a way be found...

And the courage to take it,
Step by step.

- Robert Mabry Doss

September 21, 2001

Whatsoever things are true,
Whatsoever things are honorable,
Whatsoever things are just,
Whatsoever things are pure,
Whatsoever things are lovely,
Whatsoever things are of good report,
If there be any virtue,
And if there be any praise,
Think on these things.

- Philippians 4

Send Thy peace O Lord, which is
Perfect and everlasting,
That our souls may radiate peace.

Send Thy peace O Lord, that we
May think, act and speak harmoniously.

Send Thy peace O Lord, that we
May be contented and thankful for
Thy bountiful gifts.

Send Thy peace O Lord, that amidst
Our worldly strife, we may enjoy Thy bliss.

Send Thy peace O Lord, that we
May endure all, tolerate all, in the thought of
Thy grace and mercy.

Send Thy peace O Lord, that our lives
May become a Divine vision and in Thy light,
All darkness may vanish.

Send Thy peace O Lord, our Father and Mother,
That we Thy children on Earth may all
Unite in one family.

"Prayer for Peace" - Hazrat Inayat Khan

September 19, 2001

Take courage friends.
The way is often hard,
The path is never clear,
And the stakes are very high.
Take courage.
For deep down, there is another truth:
You are not alone.

- Wayne B. Arnason

September 18, 2001

May the Love which overcomes all differences,
Which heals all wounds,
Which puts to flight all fears,
Which reconciles all who are separated,
Be in us and among us
Now and always.

- Frederick E. Gillis

This is my song, O God of all nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is,
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine;
But other hearts in other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams as true as mine.

My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine;
But other lands have sunlight too, and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine,
O hear my song, thou God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

- Lloyd Stone

September 15, 2001

Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
Deep peace of the infinite peace to you.

- Adapted from Gaelic Runes

September 14, 2001

We'll build a land where we bind up the broken.
We'll build a land where the captives go free,
Where the oil of gladness solves all mourning.
Oh, we'll build a promised land that can be.

Come build a land where sisters and brothers,
Anointed by God, may then create peace:
Where justice shall roll down like waters,
And peace like an ever flowing stream.

- Barbara Zanotti
(Isaiah/Amos), adapt.

Let us labor in hope
for the dawning of a new day
without hatred, violence, and injustice.

- Phillip Hewett

September 12, 2001

Last night I had a crazy dream
A wish was granted just for me,
It could be anything.
I didn't ask for money
Or a mansion in Malibu
I simply wished for one more day with you.

One more day
One more time
One more sunset, maybe I'd be satisfied
But then again,
I know what it would do:
Leave me wishing still, for one more day with you.

First thing I'd do is pray for time to crawl.
Then I'd unplug the telephone
And keep the TV off.
I'd hold you every second.
Say a million I Love You's.
That's what I'd do with one more day with you.

"One More Day" by Diamond Rio

In memory of all those who lost their lives in the attacks in The United States on September 11, 2001.
May we never take our loved ones for granted and unite in a prayer of peace for all people of the world.

"And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us
spoken through the ages in Psalm 23.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil for you are with me."
- US President George W. Bush's Address to the Nation

September 11, 2001

"Let us open our minds and hearts to the place of quiet,
to the silent prayer for the healing of pain,
and the soft, gentle coming of love."

The events of this day, September 11, 2001 have shocked and hurt me more than I can explain in words. Being only 20 years old, I have never experienced a major attack like this, especially in my home of the United States. I can only pray that we will pull together as a nation, and a world, and become able to someday be a more loving and peaceful world. We must stick together and get through tragedies like this united together. My heart and prayers go out to all the victims and families, as well as all of us, as citizens of the same home, the earth.

I encourage you to help in any way you can:

Give Blood: 1-800-GIVE-LIFE

Beloved, to Thee I raise my whole being,
a vessel emptied of self. Accept, O Lord,
this my emptiness, and so fill me with
Thy Self --- Thy Light, Thy Love, Thy
Life --- that these Thy precious Gifts
may radiate through me and over-
flow the chalice of my heart into
the hearts of all with whom I
come in contact this day,
revealing unto them
the beauty of
Thy joy
and
Wholeness
and
the
serenity
of Thy Peace
which nothing can destroy.

"Prayer of the Chalice" - Francis Nuttall

Love is the one business in which
it pays to be an absolute spendthrift:
give it away;
throw it away;
splash it over;
empty your pockets
shake the basket
and tomorrow you'll have even more than ever.

- From "God's Little Instruction Book for New Believers"

September 5, 2001

Do you feel you've been disowned
Left outside in the cold
And without a home?
Do you think that no one cares
That you're lost an alone
And without a prayer?

Don't give in to the lie
That there's no one you can turn to
Don't lose heart, there is hope
There is someone who will never desert you

If this world is a lonely place for you
Fall into the arms of love
If this world is a lonely place for you
There's a God who you can trust
Who'll comfort you and live you up

Are you looking for a friend
Who will stand by your side
To the very end?
Someone who is always true
To his word, be assured
He won't turn from you

Put your faith in the One
Who will never let you down
He has proven His love
Open up to all He has for you now

He hears your cry, He sees your tears
He knows your pain and all your fears
He waits for you with open arms
He longs to live inside your heart
You'll never be alone again

- "If This World", Jaci Velasquez
