Between 1838 and 1874 the Great Western Railway Controlled it's trains by showing a Disk for Clear or a Crossbar for Danger. The trains were Broad Gauge (7 Foot gauge) and regularly ran at speeds of 60 MPH and on at least one occasion 78 MPH.
