A formal process exists if one wishes to apply for training and possible future membership. It must be noted that our covens are not always able to take new students and a screening process is undertaken. The reason for this is that in working magically with others it is important to have people who are conducive to maintaining a close, safe and supportive environment.
Applicants must have positive intentions, be sincere and feel a calling to the Old Religion and the Magical Arts. Those who are interested in participating in training and possibly working towards initiation may send a detailed e-mail to oldways@slingshot.co.nz with information about themselves, how long they have been interested in Wicca, Magic, and Paganism, what books they have read, why they want to join a coven and so forth. After we have received an enquiry we usually talk to the applicant on the phone and possibly arrange further meetings with members of our coven.
The minimum age for someone to be initiated into our coven (and any traditional coven) is 18 years of age. A 17 year old applicant may however commence a training programme and attend monthly training classes, but initiation and participation in coven ritual may not generally be done until the applicant is 18 years of age.
No time-wasters please. But for those who genuinely seek to learn and practice Wicca and can commit time, energy and hard work I look forward to your email. Yes there is also a lot of fun and laughter and friendship in a coven...but it is always a balance between mirth and reverence.
