  • Bird Illness

A sick bird is not a fun thing...especially if you do not know what to do! Here are some common signs of illness in a bird:
    • noisy breathing
    • sneezing
    • panting/ tail bobbing/ labored or noisy breathing
    • loss of voice
    • discharge from nose
    • regurgitation
    • loose or runny droppings
    • constipation
    • bleeding
    • loss of balance/falling over
    • feather plucking
    • endless molt
    • crusty substance on feet, cere, beak, or around eyes
    • twitching, shaking, or seizure-like behaviors
    • lumps or bumps on body
    • sore feet

If you see any of these signs in your bird, please take him/her to an avain vet IMMEDIATELY- do not hesitate. Most of these signs can indicate LIFE THREATENING illnesses that can only be diagnosed and treated properly by an avain vet. Do NOT wait, do not e-mail me, do not post at a message board, do not use over-the-counter pet store drugs on your bird.

However, there are many illnesses, especially the most fatal ones, that cannot be shown by any of the above signs. This is why it is very important to take your bird to an avain vet at least once a year for a check-up.

ALSO, if you're afraid that your bird has been poisoned, and you live in the U.S., the National Animal Poison Control Center can help you until you can get your bird to the vet. However this should definately NOT replace a trip to the vet.
