Food and Diet
Having a nutritionally enriched diet is one of the many important factors in caring for a healthy bird.
Below are summaries of different types of main foods, as well as treats and fresh foods.
The best rounded diet you can give your bird is
pellets with seeds as an occasional treat, along with fresh foods and treat(such as millet). These foods, along with water available 24-7 and a calcium supplement(such as a cuttlebone, mineral block or crushed eggshells) will supply your bird with a balanced diet with required nutrients.
- Seed mix - This is one of the most commonly used main foods out there, but by far not the healthiest. There are different kinds of seed mixes, I recommend one with lots of different types of seeds, it gives a variety of seeds for your bird to eat.
- Seed and Pellet mix - Some choose to add pellets into a main diet, which is a very good idea. Pellets are blended together finely with vitamins and nutrients that seeds cannot provide. With the addition of pellets to seeds, it can give variety or get a bird accustomed to a pellet diet before
switching to pellets entirely.
- Pellets - Once a bird will eat them, pellets are really the best main food your bird could eat(supplemented with fruits and veggies). Since the vitamins and nutrients are all mixed in together, birds cannot pick around supplements and just eat the plain food.
- Fresh foods - in addition to the main diet, a bird requires daily amounts of fresh foods. If your bird is hesitant, experiment with different fruits and veggies and feed them in different ways(chopped up, solid, hung up like a toy, etc.)
- Treats - treats can be yummy and nutritional! Some treats, like millet, do not have much at all in the means of nutrition, but can serve as an occasional ?comfort food?. Other treats, such as Avi Cakes or stick seed treats, have a nice little serving of nutrients as well as a yummy taste.
