  • Choosing Your Bird

The biggest decision of a bird owner is: What kind of bird, where to get it, and what should I look for? Here's your place for most of those answers.

First of all, you want to know what kind of bird you want to keep. Look over your entire schedule, budget and space. Some birds are more expensive to keep and require more of your time than others. Do a little research on different bird breeds at your local library or online.

Next, you want to look at where you are going to purchase your pet. There are two basic options: Breeder or Pet Shop. If you want a more expensive pet, I'd suggest looking at breeders. However, some pet shops are of very good quality and you can purchase your pet there. If you go either way, make sure that the faculty has the following qualities:
    • The cages fairly clean; there is a CLEAN food and water source.
    • Birds on display should look attentive and healthy. There should NEVER be ill or dead birds within the cages.
    • The staff is knowledgeable and should be able to answer your questions. A really good pet shop will ask YOU questions as well.
Now after you know what kind of bird you want to purchase and where you are going to purchase it at, you are going to search for a healthy bird. When choosing your bird, look around for a bird with these qualities:
    • Looks healthy and active
    • Has clean and smooth nostrils, cere, and beak
    • Has bright, clear eyes
    • Does not have bald patches or dirty feathers
    • Has a clean vent and tailfeathers
Well, that's about it! I wish you good luck on finding your new pet!
