| The Outlier from the previous painting is here transported to a hilltop facing the morning sun. From the larger boulder in the foreground, a ceremonial avenue of stones, partially dismantled draws the eye into the composition and to the far horizon, on top on which sits the solitary monolith. Some kind of unintelligible communication seems to be taking place between these stones. The round boulder was inspired by a similar solitary rock I have seen on a limestone plateau near the town of Shap in Yorkshire, England. The smooth yellow hills, however, are taken from closer to home - the volcanic hills of Central and Western Victoria, Australia. This landscape is imaginative, although it was painted from clay models and dioramas. |
