The King And I

The King And I
would have to be one of my all time
favorite movies.
The chemistry between Yul Brynner
and Deborah Kerr sizzles!

The King and I (1956) is the popular musical
and story of the tutoring of the stubborn,
King of Siam's (Yul Brynner) wives and
children by widowed English school teacher
Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr) in 1862.
The proud, bald King is behind
the times (considered a "barbarian" by the English),
and his personality - fiercely chauvinistic, arrogant,
and unfamiliar with challenges
to his supreme rule, conflicts with the
progressive and strong will of Anna,
who is unafraid of him.
The King's two most familiar refrains and phrases are:
"Hah," and Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera and so forth.

The King sums up his relationship with her:
"You are very difficult woman."
They eventually come to
love, admire and respect each other, however.
She agrees to stay on to offer
help and advice to the new ruler
and Prince of Siam following
the Kings death.

I saw The King And I
on stage in Indiana,
one year before Yul Brynner
passed away.It was an
experience I will always remember.
