He worked as a washer-upper at the age of 14, then progressed to kitchen porter.  When he left school he was offered an apprenticeship which he took.  At 25 he working as a chef in Raymond Blancs kitchen at La Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons.

He then went into contract catering for companies like ICI and Glaxo Wellcome.

He applied to go to drama school and got accepted at The Poor School in London in 1997, where he began training and acted in classical plays.  He graduated in 1999.
