WELL (Roger de Well, Temp. Richard II, ca. 1380) ;and another named, Wells.
This Coat of Arms, belonging to one "Roger OF THR WELL," and another simply named "WELLS," consists of a gold shield on which is painted a standing green griggin (a mythical creature whose lower half is a lion, and upper half is an eagle.)

Predating the arms of Isaac Welman of Poundsford Park by more than three centuries, this design is the first to be associated with the place name Well or Wells.  As such this standing griffin design is the oldest and simplest and is the original Coat of Arms for surnames with the root WELL or WELLS including the WELLMAN families of America.
