Sue came to Virginia from Long Island, NY. As a junior Sue rode sale horses and young horses. She also taught at a stable called Parkview in Central Isip, NY. Sue rode in many clinics with the legendary Gordon Wright and the infamous George Morris. It was during a clinic with George Morris that he encouraged Sue to pursue a career in horses. This encouragement made Sue strive to become a top professional. Sue’s experience is widely varied; in her career she has worked as a groom, show barn manager, breeding farm manager, stallion manager, riding instructor, and a freelance exercise rider for race horses, show horses, field hunters and driving horses. Sue’s particular talents include recognizing potential in young prospects, breaking and starting young hunters and jumpers, and diagnosing and developing untrained or difficult horses so they become safe and easy for others to ride. Sue’s ‘horse of a lifetime’ came in the form of a striking stallion: Simbalu. Simbalu a thoroughbred who began his career on the racetrack found his way to Sue and together they found their way to the top of the sport in the hunter divisions. In 1992 Sue and Simbalu were featured in the Rodney Jenkins video discussing quality’s a rider should look for in a show hunter. In 1994 Simbalu was the High Score Regular Working Hunter Selle Francais approved horse. In 1995 the pair finished as the American Horse Show Association Zone III Reserve Champion in the Regular Working Hunter’s. And were the Regular Working Hunter Horse of The Year in the Virginia Horse Show Association. Simbalu stamps his get with many of the qualities he has himself. They are attractive, move well, jump well, have a big stride and are easy and well mannered horses. A few successful horses from the Simbalu line which Sue helped start and/ or showed are: El Roy, Arute, Baloo, Richard and The Lion’s Share. Sue also was influential in the early part of the famous Roxdene’s career! Sue is currently working with a very talented Pre-Green Hunter named; Noble Knight. Sue has also had success in the jumper ring with a mare named Scarlett. Sue has ridden extensively with many world-class riders, including Katie Prudent, Kim Prince, George Morris, Rodney Jenkins, Nina Fout and Jan Bynny. Below: Sue Lyman and Richard |
