Reuben BumpusReuben Bumpus and most of his family entered the Henry County poor house late in 1867. Wondering why, I searched for reasons like crop failure, illness, and everything I could think of but found no real reason... Now, what happened to the Bumpus farm at Blountsville IN. in 1867. Looking at the list of people entering the Henry Co. poor farm, I find many families were in the same boat as Reuben's. Some stayed, some left and returned multiple times and some died there, as did Reuben, his wife and some of his children. As far as I can tell, the increase in poor farm arrivals started in the mid 1860's and lasted almost the rest of the century. It was the economy, the depression that sent them to the poor farm. I'm sure the banks had no mercy, nor did the Federal Government. No
wonder Samuel and his second wife were denied a pension. Samuel was denied in
1880, even though it was proven it almost impossible for him to hold a job because
of disease and the leg wound, both from his services in the Army. Mary, applying
in 1885, was denied a widows pension until about 1900. Grant's in-laws were true
conservatives.
