Bumpus
Records indicate that Samuel Bumpus arrived in Carthage,
Jasper Co, MO in 1868 or 69, Married Catherine Isabella Lattin in 1869 and in
the 1870 census they lived next door to Dimmick Lattin, 70 y/o his wife, Cyrenia,
55 y/o, and children, George and Mary.
George James was born
later that year. In the 1880 census, Samuel was living on the Jasper Co poor farm
and was listed as 38 y/o, outof work for six months, house carpenter, widowed,
birthplace Ohio, father born NY, mother b CT. This corresponds with the 1870 census.
He married Amanda Ballinger in 1881.
A death certificate indicates Samuel
died in Web City, Jasper Co, MO. in August of 1885 of "cerebral congestion
and laryngitis", whatever that is.

b. PA. That same month Amanda Bumpus was re-admitted to the poor farm and stayed
there until Oct. 1894 when she "went to live with Mr. Estes".
