| A question you might ask yourself is why would I want to be a nurse? Don't they just, you know, change bed pans and give enemas? Well, they may do that but their job is a lot more complex then that! Nurses can do almost anything. They can work on an air rescue team, help out with investigations by being a forensics nurse, or provide bedside care in paediatrics. Wherever your career in nursing take you, you will be part of an exciting, caring profession. Why would you want to be a nurse? I know that here in Alberta we have suffered massive cuts to our health care system. This has caused a whole generation of nurses to be missing. As a nurse graduating in Canada, you will see by the year 2011 that there will be a shortage of 59 000 to 113 000. That is incrediable, and that isn't only Canada. There is a world wide shortage of highly qualified nurses, and you will be a highly recognized nurse with your BScN! In addition to job security, you gain portable skills, you can chose to work full or part time or casual, and where your BScN can take you is endless. Nurses work in a vast variety of places, ranging from home care to community to acute care hospitals, to the military. The choices are endless! And probably the best thing about nursing is that you never have to stay put in one area if you don't want to. Nurses are always learning, our education never stops. You can work for a few years as an OR nurse and then decide to work in a burn unit or maybe the ER or go right out of the hospital setting and work with the elderly in the community. What other kind of job offers you so many exciting, different, and challenging areas? |
