| MORE ABOUT THE MAN WHO SPENT TOO MUCH TIME IN THE SUN |
| I'm a Dallas native who fell in love with gardening when I bought my first home about three years ago. The yard and pictures you see on this site may appear a little dreamy now, but my backyard was nothing short of nightmarish when I first purchased the house. There were weeds and brush, no lawn, just a lot of thistles and sandburs. The soil consisted of a one to two inch layer of clay over solid limestone. Paradise, eh? I used a mattock to break the rocks and put in the flower beds. Since my backyard doesn't have rear access, I had to hand carry each 40 lb bag of topsoil from the frontyard up 39 steps each time. I must have carried a total of around 60 bags and that's not counting mulch, bonemeal, new hoses and all the other materials, including the plants. It's been worth it, though and I'd do it all over again, but I'm glad I don't have to. There's still much work to be done, but it's therapuetic, artistic, and imaginative and I enjoy the reward of seeing something beautiful. For trivia nuts, I 'm in my 30's, a Baylor grad (Sic em Bears because the football team can't) and I do database management for a lawfirm. I write and compose music as a passion when I'm not working or pulling weeds. My music can be listened to (free of charge) at the bottom of this page if you are interested in hearing something a little different. It blends world beat, classical, industrial, rock, and newage together and whatever mood I'm in that day.. I am also involved in a local band called Gravity Euphonic as the lead vocalist (some of it sounds like Marilyn Manson and Orgy, but we have a much broader sound than that as our bassist also plays cello). E-mail me (composer@sbcglobal.net) if you've developed some new cool flowering hybrid that can take Texas summers, will bloom 12 months out of the year in dense shade, requires no deadheading or dividing, and will spread without being invasive. If it can be trained to pop out of a seed packet and go run and plant itself, even better! Happy Gardening and don't let the bad bugs bite. John Stephens |
