The shelf material is one of the laminated types available at Home Depot or wherever. It comes in a variety of colors so you can pick whatever suits your taste.
The basic tools required are: table or radial saw, drill, soldering iron, wire strippers and screwdriver. If you don't have a saw, take it to a lumber place and they will chop it for you. Home Depot will do the straight cuts but aren't set up (the one here anyway) for angled cuts.
