The original weight conditions for the Golden Slipper were designed to give fillies as much opportunity as colts and geldings to win the
race. There was conjecture that it was unfair to the male horses but it was four years before a filly, Magic Night, became the first of her sex to win the Slipper. She was also the last of Star Kingdom's
progeny but not the last of his line to win the Slipper. Magic Night was unplaced at her first two starts but then won her next three before her run in the Golden Slipper. Sent out at 15/1 she was ridden by
Mel Schumacher (having his first ride in the event). She went on to beat favourite Young Brolga by half a length with Commanding third a further four lengths away. She then ran third in the AJC Sires Produce
Stakes. |
