We live in a small town in North Central Washington. The Apple reigns supreme in this little valley. The Cascade Mountains stand above us and bring us our four amazing seasons. We have a subtle spring with lush green grass on all the hills and the sweet scent of apple and cherry blossoms fill the valley for almost a month. This is the time of the fawn and the foal. Our summers are hot but with the river running through our valley and one of the largest fresh water lakes only a few miles away there is always a cool place to wallow through the heat. Fall here is my favorite time. Fall is always an end to the heat of summer and the beginning of getting ready for those cold winter months. I think that the smells of fall may be my favorite, with all of the earthy smells and sweet apple scents there is nothing quite like it. Winter in this valley brings quiet and time spent breaking water buckets, shoveling snow, thickly bedded stalls, as the horses will spend most of their days in from the cold and snow. Winter here is when I get time to read all of those books I had meant to read on summer vacations and it is also the time when I love to cook. The smells of stew, fresh bread, and pie often fill our cozy home. |
