Federal Prosecutor Gail Hannigan was on the verge of sending a group
of high-ranking mobsters to prison for good, but then she and her husband
were targeted for assassination. She barely survived, but he did not.
After months of physical therapy, Gail was whole again physically...
but her mind snapped when she learned that the mobsters had gone free during
her recovery. She discovered they had been freed by a judge on the take,
and this corrupt official became the first victim of the bloody justice
by Gail's alter-ego of Death Mask. The high ranking mobsters all fell in
short order thereafter. Soon, Death Mask was a feared figure of mystery
that was both celebrated and villified by the media.
Gail has so far managed to hide her homocidal thirst for revenge from the world, disguising herself as Death Mask when she goes on her vigilante killing-sprees. Her collegues at the small lawfirm where she currently works have no knowledge of her double-life, although those who know her well know something is wrong. They often to urge her to seek more counciling and therapy, but she always reacts with anger to such suggestions. Gail does not think herself insane--she thinks she is the only one able to punish those in positions of authority who pervert law and justice for their own gain.
Death Mask's costume is a simple one; a dark business suit, white shirt, broad tie, and a featureless white mask with eye holes and narrow openings that allow Gail to breath. Gail has no supernatural powers of abilities, but she is in peak physical condition and secretly trains with a wide range of firearms and melee weapons. Death Mask carefully stalks her victims and kills them in the most efficient manner, always making contact with a witness immediately after the slaying to leave documentation of the murdered person's corruption and crimes with him or her, stating, "Deliver this to the autorities, or you will be next."
Death Mask has no single headquarters, but operates out of Gail's home, office, and a disused structure on the grounds of an amusement park near the city of Seattle. The graveyard shift security staff at the park has discovered that Death Mask uses the grounds, but they keep quiet, as they support her one-woman war against corruption.
