About Machu Picchu Trips

Machu Picchu its located high in the Andes Mountains in modern Peru. It lies 43 miles northwest of Cuzco at the top of a ridge, hiding it from the Urabamba gorge below.

The ridge is between a block of highland and the massive Huaynac Picchu, around which the Urubamba River takes a sharp bend.

The surrounding area is covered in dense bush, some of it covering Pre-Colombian cultivation terraces.

Machu Picchu (which means "Old Peak") was most likely a royal estate and religious retreat. It was built between 1460 and 1470 AD by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, an Incan ruler.

The city has an altitude of 8,000 feet, and is high above the Urubamba River canyon cloud forest, so it likely did not have any administrative, military or commercial use. After Pachacuti’s death, Machu Picchu became the property of his allus, or kinship group, which was responsible for it’s maintenance, administration, and any new construction.

Machu Picchu Trips Itinerary:

Day 1: Cusco – Aguas Calientes

The adventure will begin from the city of Cusco (the capital of the Inca empire), where we will take an early train headed to the town of Aguas Calientes along the Urubamba valley all along enjoying the wonderful landscape. Upon your arrival a representative of the agency will be waiting to transfer you to your hotel where you will spend the night. You might have the afternoon free to visit the medicinal hot springs that have different temperatures or visit Machu Picchu independently before the guided tour the next morning.

Machu Picchu Trips Day 2: Machupicchu - Cusco

Wake up is very early to take advantage of the few people who will be in Machu Picchu and to appreciate the beautiful sunrise. This is the best time to see the "Lost City." Our local guide will provide detailed information about the Inca history before most of the other tourists arrive at midday. We will have a guided tour for approximately 2 hours and then you will have free time so you can explore more of Machu Picchu before boarding a tour bus headed to town for our train back to Ollantaytambo or Poroy, then to be transferred to Cusco.
