| Where do I begin with this Masterpiece. This movie has the best opening sequence I have ever seen to date. Even the music that plays at the very beginning, a symphonic, operatic, horrific, melodious tone. Pefectly setting the mood for what the audience is about to experience. The movie is so good, it will keep you guessing, until the very end. Kinji Fukasaku, keeps the pace moving quickly, while the characters in the movie interacts, giving us just enough information about each one of them. Subtle, yet brilliant scriptwriting. Add to that a superb Cast. They really "look" like the kids they portray. Which is more painful when you see them killing each other, playing the game they are all forced to play. It basically sets a new standard in depicting violence in the movies. Fear, tension, betrayal, chaos, nail biting suspense, & depression. Not to mention loud screams, sighs of painful gestures, and someone saying "Dam, that must've hurt!" while watching BATTLE ROYALE. As mentioned above, the movie opens with an operatic music as the TOHO pictures logo opens the movie. A prologue explains that by the dawn of the millenium, the nation collapsed. 85% of the population were out work, and at only 15% employment, the youths started boycotting shool, and causing widespread havoc. The adults fearing the youths, prompted to pass a reform act to set the youths straight, deliquent or otherwise. Hence, the new law is called "The Millenium Educational Reform Act", a.k.a "The B R act", a.k.a "Battle Royale". After seeing the winner of the last Battle Royale, we then meet the new unfortunate 9th graders next in line to play the game. The main characters Nanahara, Noriko, & Kawada (whom we meet 5 minutes into the movie) At first we see Nanahara(Tatsuya Fujiwara) finding out his Dad had hung himself. Then Noriko(Aki Maeda) coming to class late only to find out that the class has been cancelled by the students themselves. Properly writing on the blackboard "Takin' the day off, cause we want to!" Looking at the blackboard is their teacher Kitano, (played wonderfully with disturbing delight by Takeshi Kitano) who acknowledges by walking out of the classroom, but only to be attacked by Nobu,(one of his own students.) After being stabbed by Nobu, who drops the knife in the process, while running away. Noriko who happens to be Nobu's good friend decided to pick up, and hide the knife from their teacher. Of course, Kitano's no fool. The next day, a bus load of students are on their way to a field trip. 42 students in all including Nanahara, Noriko, & Nobu are in the bus. While in the bus we see their youthful nature as they pick on each other, reveal crushes for each other, polaroid pictures of each other, giving each other treats like cookies for instance, and so on. During the trip Nanahara suddenly wakes up and finds out everyone had been put to sleep by some sort of sleeping gas, and also attracting one of the attendants' attention who bashes him on the head, Ouch! Waking up, the students find themeselves in some sort of classroom with two other "new" transfer students. The one in blue is Kawada(Taro Yamamoto) and the one in black is Kiriyama(Masanobu Ando). Nanahara who's first to wake up scours the crowd looking for Nobu, and Noriko, also discovering that all of them had some sort of necklace, or a metal collar of some sort. Soon after, Kitano walks in the classroom with full military escort behind him. Nobu, of course is shocked. Everyone is. As he calmly explains why they are chosen (by impartial lottery) to play the B R game. The students struggling to keep calm and to show that they didn't care couldn't help themselves but to break down when Kitano explained that the only lesson to be learned here is to kill each other. Motobuchi, a student asked"After I play the game, may I go home?" Kitano answers "Yes, but only if everyone else is dead." Only one surivor is allowed in Battle Royale. The students although scared to death after Kitano's explanation still needed a bit more convincing so, he brings out a straight bed with a bloody cover on top. Kitano pulls the cover off revealing a very dead body of a teacher who didn't agree with the idea of sending Kitano's students to play,, therefore was shot down by the military. Bullet holes all over the body can be seen..... CLICK TO CONTINUE P.2 |
