What is OpenCourseWare?

OpenCourseWare is a multi-million dollar education giveaway consisting of hundreds of free online college courses, including some with video lectures. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation donated large sums of money for one purpose: to help MIT provide free access to their course materials for teachers, students and self learners around the globe. Learn more...

Sounds great! But what is MIT4Free?

The purpose of MIT4Free is to build a 100% free community around MIT's free online college courses, and to create learning groups around these online college courses, enabling a true distance learning experience free of charge, instead of a lonely independent study of dubious value. Wondering what other students thought of a particular class? Read the online course reviews, posted by other MIT4Free users! Are you stuck on problem #7, or did you find a great online study guide? Post your question or comment to the course's discussion board. No more need to hunt for OpenCourseWare discussion groups! Each course has its own discussion board and a separate review board! Simply select a subject on the left to view the courses available within that subject.

Each course has its own notecard (see animated example below-- Stop Animation), displaying a brief description of the course, the textbooks you'll need for the course, a button to view or post reviews, a button to view or post questions or comments, and a button to open the course's homepage on the MIT site. When you select course reviews or discussion board, the notecard will "flip over" to show you the posts for the course, and allow you to post a review or comment of your own. No log-in. No sign-up.

Mathematics 18.06: Linear Algebra Books
(Demo only--links not active) Learn all about matrices: the null space, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, linear independence, and much more. The course includes a complete set of video lectures! Taught by Prof. Gilbert Strang.

Or, if you prefer, read all posts here.

Why did you do all this?

I wanted to foster a sense of community among self-learners (though all are welcome here). The existence of these free online college courses needs to be known before their true potential can be reached. A collection of one thousand independent learners is not nearly as strong as a thousand-person learning community.

Knowledge is a great tool, one that needs to be shared. I invite you to use the message boards, post reviews, and join the community of people harvesting a free education, thanks to MIT's vision. I also get a small percentage from textbooks purchased through the links to However, you're welcome to use MIT4Free wherever you get the textbooks. Please note, MIT4Free is not affiliated with MIT or the OpenCourseWare project.

You probably won't get a complete MIT education online--there simply aren't the same face-to-face interpersonal interactions that are such a valuable aspect of the college experience. However, I believe that by forming small goups, on this site or within your community, an equally valuable environment can be created to enhance your distance learning, independent study, free online college courses. Join countless others who are now learning on their own schedule from one of the world's most prestigious institutions of higher learning.

Learning, to me, is the most fulfilling human experience. Whether you're a high school student looking for a head start, a college graduate looking for a broader knowledge base, a financially challenged would-be student looking for intellectual stimulation, or a teacher looking for new ideas, you have come to the right place.

There is so much! Where do I start?
