My First Prenatal Checkup: 11/01/00
Today was a very interesting day. I spent 6 hours at the clinic. My appt was at 9:30am and when I was finally seen at 10:15, it was only to fill out paperwork...no exam. Well, I have had a pain in my right side since last Saturday and it keeps getting worse everyday. I am horrified that it will be a tubal pregnancy so I asked to see a doctor as soon as possible. Well, they sent me to the lab to draw 5 things of blood and also took a urine sample. I went back to the clinic area after the blood was drawn and they told me that I could be seen at 2 pm by a doctor. So, I went and got something to eat, hung out at my Mom's for about an hour and went back to the clinic. Well, the doctor took my history, did a pap-smear, took samples from my cervix, checking for STD's ( which they do for everyone by the way) and then he talked to me about the possibility of the pain being caused by a tubal pregnancy. After the talk, he took me in a room to do an ultrasound but really didn't expect to find anything because I am only around 2 weeks pregnant...but he did it anyways. He didn't find anything in the Uterus and he looked at the spot that hurts as well and didn't find anything there either. So, since he couldn't see anything, he told me that he is going to have me take another blood test then come in on Friday for another blood test and see him again on Wednesday of next week for the results. He said that if the pregnancy is normal, then the HCG hormone will have increased from today's sample to Friday's sample. He said that if there is no increase in the HCG hormone or if the level decreases, then the pregnancy is not normal. The way he was talking, it sounds like he thinks it is a tubal pregnancy. He said that if the hormone level decreases, then there will be many more tests done to see what is going on. So, I go in on Friday just to give more blood and then I see him on Wednesday to find out what the results of the pap-smear, blood work and urine anaylsis are. Well, thinking that this might be a tubal pregnancy, I cried all the way home and I felt terrible. The only things going through my mind were...can both myself and the child survive the pregnancy and is it worth it? I was so depressed all the way home. Anyways, I get home and I drank a glass of milk and I have almost finished 2 glasses of water and my pain isn't as bad as it was. I think, and I hope, that I am just dehydrated and that drinking this water will take the pain away and the threat or possibility of a tubal pregnancy. That would really be great. I am only a little over 2 weeks pregnant and I am already attached to this child...it's incredible. So, this was basically how my day went. Next Wednesday look for the 2nd appt to see what's new. Thanks for reading! Oh...if you have gone through anything similiar or if you know anything about the pain I could be experiencing, I would really appreciate if you could write to me about it....it would help a lot! I know that my Mom went through a tubal pregnancy with my brother and they both made it, although it about killed her and she said she never had any pain like I am talking about. She said she also knows a woman who has had 2 tubal pregnancies and she and her children are fine. Any comments, stories or advice would be great! Bye!
