Owl's Info on Rock-A-Bye-Baby

The Story of "Rock-A-Bye-Baby"

It is reported that the author of the well-loved lullaby, "Rock-a-Bye-Baby" was a pilgrim who sailed on the Mayflower. The Wampanoag Indians, who became friends with the pilgrims carried their infants in cradleboards on their backs. In temperate weather, the Indians suspended the cradles from tree limbs so that passing breezes could rock the babies while their mothers tended the maize and beans. Nursery rhymes remain popular in families today. Perhaps the gentle lilt and inflection soothes some children. Perhaps, too, the familiar nursery rhymes reminds youngsters of the cuddling, holding, and reassurance they felt as a young child.
