During 2006, fundraising and charitable support activities shifted focus to the Western states. We supported several groups providing assistance to the Lakota Sioux living on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. We also discovered the Buffalo Field Campaign in West Yellowstone, Montana. Please visit the sites linked below and consider offering your support.
Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation

Crafting for a Cause

Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is "home" to the Lakota Sioux tribes. The two counties the reservation covers are the poorest two counties in the United States. It is unthinkable that people in the U.S. should live like this, but, under the "protection" of the U.S. government, the native population lives in conditions worst than most third-world countries. Because their land is held "in trust" by the government, most cannot even farm, build homes, or run cattle. It is a deplorable situation.

The Friends of Pine Ridge Reservation is a well-organized effort to support the many not-for-profit social service agencies and schools on the Reservation. Crafting for a Cause is a crafts group which makes and donates blankets, sweaters, shawls, etc., to groups and individuals.

Buffalo Field Campaign
West Yellowstone, Montana

This is an amazing group of people! The State of Montana has a zero-tolerance policy on wild buffalo. When the last genetically-pure herd of wild buffalo in Yellowstone National Park migrate into parts of Montana, they are hunted or hazed into traps and slaughtered. The Buffalo Field Campaign is a volunteer group that monitors the buffalo's movements as well as the behavior of the Park rangers and Montana Department of Livestock employees. Their vigilance has captured on film and tape all manner of mistreatment of the buffalo. If more people knew this situation existed and voiced their concerns, the buffalo might once again be allowed to roam freely.
