TANKA by Lisa Arnold

sitting beside you

wishing upon midnight star

for you to love me

as much as I cherish you but

my wish dies on fading star

descending from me

is all I ever craved

I reach but it falls

from the cradle of my hand

disintegrating into dust

summer rain falls

from dark sky

as I walk down lonely roads

searching for my soul

which has escaped me

night wind blows

calmly around us

as we say goodbye

and walk slowly away

in different directions

day fades rapidly

as approaching night falls on

Ohio river

cascading vast shadows over

shimmering rippling waters.

encircling winds

carry my drifting thoughts

I try to grasp them but

another rush of wind

rips them from me

morning sun wakes me

I watch you sleeping

and recall that beautiful day

when you proposed marriage

and when I said yes

I touch your sweet face

kiss your cold cheek

and caress your soft hair

and I ask the angels

to watch over you
