Black Metal - is dark and fast music using melodic ddevelopment to express its themes. Of all the metals, this is the most communicative with the modern listener, expressing nihilism and a heroic anti-social assertion of the self. Evolving simultaneously with death metal, this genre includes all of the technique and rhythmic intensity of the former with more emotive and comprehensible poetic communication within the music. Definitely not a music genre for everyone.

ABSU - Fast American black metal band in the old school style like Slayer or Sodom, with added varying clean vocals and different types of song structures.

ABSURD - Pioneering black metal fusion from Germany who received a large degree of media attention for their politics and actions without acknowledgment of the sublime naturalism to this music.

The ABYSS - A side project of Swedish death metal maniacs Hypocrisy, the Abyss is melodic and fast black metal that is probably the best output from this group of musicians. Sort of a Gorgoroth ripoff in parts but very cool nonetheless.

ANCIENT - Second wave Norwegian melodramatic black metal, pretty cool but rapidly degrading into commercially-purer music. However, pretty melodies and vaguely amusing eeevil lyrics make even the second album better than most stuff.

ANGELCORPSE - Ripping black metal from the United States, Angelcorpse arose from the ashes of Order From Chaos and formed a modern style, high-speed death/black metal effort.

ANTAEUS - Cut yourself and worship Satan - the voice of the cursed and hateful in humanity, this band exhibit mourning behavior for the stupidity of humankind in the rejection of our natural world.

APHASIA - A grinding black metal band with a little growling.

ARCTURUS - A side project of members of Mayhem (Hellhammer) and Ulver.

AUZHIA - Catching the edge of the burgeoning black metal trend, Auhzia from simple elements built black metal in the flowing style of early Graveland.

AVENGER - Newer school rockable black metal with aspects of the ancients embedded in ripping verse.

AVERSE SEFIRA - Currently one of the few interesting black metal bands from the North American continent, Averse Sefira continue the legacy of raw and rudimentary black metal aspiring to atmospheric and epic effect.

AXIS OF ADVANCE - Splintered from the origins of Sacramentary Abolishment, this fast and chaotic black metal aspires to some form of new style.

BATHORY - The simple thrash project that revived black metal became history when Quorthon's first two albums took over the reigns to extreme from Slayer, Sodom, and Venom. Later music is more mass-produced speedmetal.
