|Our Goals and Guarantees|
During the last few years during a growing interest in the improvement and advancement of the pygmy as a breed, I have talked to many Pygmy breeders. Nearly all have told me that the Pygmy is one of the sweetest and most loving of all pets but are fragile and not a hardy animal. There have been trends in the past to produce a short bodied, boxy looking, tiny pygmy. This was a very cute animal but it was found that c-sections and kidding problems arose in the Does. This trend thankfully has not been popular lately and we are once again breeding an animal with more length and size for easier kidding (while keeping the pygmy small to the NPGA standard). Also it has been found that there is a possible overuse of antibiotics and other drugs because of the fragile status of the pygmy. Antibiotics are becoming non-effective in humans as well as animals because of the incomplete use or misuse of many antibiotics.
One of our goals at Debonair is to produce a healthy, hardy and easy kidding line of pygmies that does not require antibiotics except on rare occasions when a true need arises. I believe it is possible to improve the breed's overall health. I have chosen my foundation stock for the conformation traits and health status to help me achieve my goals while producing a pygmy that conforms to the NPGA show standard.
