| Today the maiden city hails, Heroic deeds of old, And on its famed and ancient walls, The crimson flag unfold. Nigh on three hundred years have gone, Since that historic day, When gaunt, beleaguered derry saw, The prisoning boom give way. Against the flowing barricade, The Mountjoy stoutly sailed, The shattered timbers fell apart, The siege of derry failed. And gates which in defiance closed, Against the encircled foe, Now wide are flung, as proudly borne, the crimson banner go. So derry men that August day, In memory still enshrine, And honour still the `Apprentice boys`, of eighteen sixty nine. |
| "The church and kirke did jointly preach and pray, In St.Columbs church most lovingly, Where Dr. Walker, to their great content, Preached stoutly against a popish government, Master Mackenzie preached on the same theme, And taught the army to fear gods great name, The reverand Rowat did confirm us still, Preaching submission to gods holy will, He likewise prophesied over relief, when it surpassed all human belief, The same was taught by learned Mr Crooks, And master Hamilton showed it from his books, Then Mills, a ruling elder, spoke the same, Of our relief, six weeks before it came, From sunrising to sunsetting they taught, While we against the enemy, bravely fought" |
