How many times have you heard what is perhaps the most famous ballad of the Siege, "Derrys` Walls". On the 12th, Black Saturday and of course Derry day, this song can be heard on many occasions, but did you ever stop to think of the sorrow, famine, suffering those brave and fearless people behind the walls endured so that we, the Protestant people would be free to sing such ballads which reflect our cultural heritage. As we remember with pride men like Mitchelburne, Campsie, Walker and Murray etc, let us not forget all those who died during that great siege in defence of freedom. Many if not all of those resident in the district at that time played some part in the events leading to the siege and indeed that great event itself, but because of their lowly position on the social scale, have, after playing their part, passed from the scene unhonoured and unsung. So each time you look up towards Heaven, give these unsung hero`s a wee thought, and remember that they too, `NEVER SURRENDERED`, Lest we forget these brave men... |
