Copyrights halt the reprint of certain poems and quotes I would love to pass along to everyone within this page.  Where I could, I quoted - where I couldn't, I did my best to provide sites and "directions" to lines and poems I wish everyone could experience.  That is the sole reason for my quoting anything - for everyone to share in the emotional experience of certain word strings.  If, by chance, something has been misquoted or should not, by copyright, be reprinted, please e-mail me, Dawna, and I will remove it immediately.

  Although they are

             Only breath, words
             which I command

           Tonight I've watched

               The moon and then
               the Pleiades
               go down
               The night is now
               half-gone; youth

LI. Ille mi par esse deo videtur
Translated by Lord Byron

Equal to Jove that youth must be--
Greater than Jove he seems to me--
Who, free from Jealousy's alarms,
Securely views thy matchless charms.
The cheek, which ever dimpling glows,
That mouth, from whence such music flows,
To him, alike, are always known,
Reserved for him, and him alone.
Ah! Lesbia, though 'tis death to me,
I cannot choose but look on thee;
But, at the sight, my senses fly;
I needs must gaze, but, gazing, die;
Whilst trembling with a thousand fears,
Parched to the throat my tongue adheres,
My pulse beats quick, my breath heaves short,
My limbs deny their slight support,
Cold dews my pallid face o'erspread,
With deadly languor droops my head,
My ears with tingling echoes ring,
And life itself is on the wing;
My eyes refuse the cheering light,
Their orbs are veiled in starless night;
Such pangs my nature sinks beneath,
And feels a temporary death.

- Gaius Valerius Catullus 84? B.C.-54 B.C -
from the Portable Roman Reader, edited by Basil Davenport, p. 264-5

Introducing . . . James Herlihy:
Wind Walker

My Favorite

    Sometimes I catch
that perfect glimpse
of a moment caught in time.
        I see perfection
        In the past
    And a beauty so sublime.

    The flawless wisdom
    Of our birthright
   Great Spirit must have known
        That I would
        be the writer
And you, My friend, the poem

Another Birthday for Wolf!

We each walk a path
In this circle of life
We live out each day
Whether in joy or strife

And sometimes we're gifted
With a moment so clear
We can reach for the sky
The stars seem so near

In that very instant
We are called on to act
To take what is offered
To break from the pack

So grab that brass ring
Fill your basket with hope
Call on the spirit of Eagle
And you with Antelope

And remember, my sister,
That whatever you do
Wherever you travel
My love goes with you.

SOMEWHEN

Once I caught the perfect moment,
A fleeting instant out of time
Stretching away to eternity,
Painted bright, yet so sublime.

A moment's pleasure for young love
In the heat of passion's raging fire.
Too soon the fire banked and cooled
And the love became a funeral pyre.

Death to Love, the source of light,
And light is borne of darkness.
Darkness claims its own reward
When love becomes a harness.

But a thousand instants out of time
Join to form one Then,
And as the memory of Then is Now,
Darkness became love again.

And so the circle is reborn
To forever turn in endless time;
Pain to love and death to life
In the perfect moment forever mine.

Excerpt from PAIR OF DUCKS

. . . I think sometimes I think too much
But I really want to know;
If there are many roads but one destination
What does it matter how I go?

For Sonya (UNTITLED)

I hear your voice
Carried on thin wires
Across so many miles
And the tears fill my eyes.
I see your face
Through shadowed memory
Of a time long-since gone
And pain fills my heart.
I welcome these tears
And this anguish
For I'd thought them lost
And they are my friends.
I drink deeply of those
Cool-water memories of you
And embrace the waves
Of love carried on pain.
And as the tears subside
And pain slowly fades
I look beyond yesterday
To see tomorrow, and know
That I have neither won nor lost.
I have lived well and
I have laughed and cried in love
And I can see
That we will live forever
Each in the heart of the other
And that is as it should be
For that, my friend, is love.

COLD-SWEAT Pt. I

From a cold-sweat nightmare I awake
Screaming
In pain that vanishes
Before touching consciousness.
Frightened
I look to my hands
For the living blood drying,
Dying,
That was there only a moment before.
Nothing,
Yet it was so real.
I touch my face, my chest.
All is as it was,
Yet something is missing
Or added;
Innocence lost to awareness
Of the killer within.
COLD-SWEAT Part II

From a cold-sweat nightmare
I awake, silent
Scream echoing in my mind.
Desperately I reach
For images quickly fading
Like smoke on a wind,
But am left holding nothing
Save my breath.
What was it I saw
In Morpheus' smothering embrace,
Lurking amidst the blood
And the sweat and the fears?
Perhaps I'll never know.
Perhaps I know too well.

TREES

How many times have I
Looked at a tree,
And thought;
It's in the way
Of what I want to see.
Never noticing the beauty,
Only thinking of I,
Myself;
Never seeing how trees
Touch both Earth and Sky.
Unaware of the time that
Has gone before them,
Uncounted;
One life for a tree makes
For many of men.
Now I see the Earth,
And the sky, and the tree
And know:
What a glorious feeling
To stand still, and be free.

Serenity is:
Looking over my shoulder at the past
And knowing in my heart,
I had to come through "there"
In order to get "here,"
And that it's alright to cry.

Serenity is:
Looking ahead to the future
And thinking in my mind
That no matter what lies ahead
I am strong enough,
And that it's alright to hope.

Serenity is:
Looking today straight in the eye
And feeling in my soul
That whatever this day brings
I can be grateful,
And that it's alright to accept.

Lucretius
      . . . without rains
In proper season, earth could ne'er bring forth
Her fruits to glad men's hearts; nor yet, apart
From food could all the breeds of living things
Renew their kind, now gain their livelihood.

Lucretius - On the Nature of Things; BI,196-200 Charlles E. Bennet trans.

But if we hold that when two bodies meet
This through the air's condensing doth befall,
We go astray; for that is empty then
Which was not so before, and this is filled
Which late was empty.  Nor in such a wise
Can air condense; nor even were it so,
Could it, I ween, apart from void, contract
And gather into one its several parts.

Lucretius - On the Nature of Things; BI, 391-398
                        Charles E. Bennet trans.

Likewise that bounteous fount of liquid light,
The sun, high throned in heaven, doth flood the sky
With radiance ever new, and with fresh light . . .

Lucretius - On the Nature of Things; BV, 283-285
Charles E. Bennet trans.

I was

Thirsty you let me drink from
Your platinum chalice

An intoxicating brew
And you knew

I was

Soldiering past undone
Contentment

Where are you now?  Up there
In your skyscraping castle
Living memories of those before

Bolder than most
Humbler than few, yet so deserving . . .

And
You
Knew

Where are you now?          Dawna - 2000

None would have bet those odds

Now I'll iron out my ironies
wrinkled beyond my expectations

Perhaps you are safe only from yours
Not from mine

Forever's already here
Long gone is tomorrow

Days without you make me hunger
For what made me complete

I wish to bring harmony
Harps and lyres help

Is this the real me
or just who I want to be?

                                                                                                    whatever tides turn

                                                                            Wherever turns eternal
                                                                            Everything is here
                                                                    waiting

You say you don't believe - your words are different than your display

                                                            Now that you're older . . . wiser
                                                            you can only play
the glance of one who knows . . .

            Fantasy, reality
            The wires crossed

Crossed that river in one jump
            Can't find my way back

Back to the cliff from whence I leapt

You are more than I can hold

Worlds tilt between planets . . .
Flying to Titan o'er mercurial flickers, smoggy peaks
setting shore so effortlessly
Led to mystery's gate
Led to grasp . . .
all enchantments rate
as nebulous yet much . . .
Within and without the eminent
Power which can't be touched

Hold the confines uncrossed
Up and over, tarry lost
Ever upward, persistent route
Up, down, in, out
Feet firmly planted, firmly planted

Souls can touch
  can reach
can heal
    can be . . .

                                complete

The Carthage queen
is playing solitaire with your words

Mind whirling over feelings colliding
like sabers of old

Without those eyes to view her
Dido is a fresco in an empty hall

Memories fading
 memories trading
   from light to dark
         from perfection to stark

Too many people have stolen your pride
Too many loved ones have died
leaving you lifeless . . . breathless

Here's a lifeline
Grab on, don't let go
Even though
You're there and I'm here
We're not alone

Stare at the steps of life
            Plaintive
            Tentative
Take the first step of life
            Expecting
            Unknowing
                                Pitch forward
                               Pitch back
                                Pitch upward
                                Pitch yourself
                                Pitch

            Climbing the stairways of life
            Unsure
           Unknowing
Look behind at the stairways of life
            Frustrations
            Contentment
                                Glance forward
                                Glance death
                                Glance upward
                                Glance heaven
                                Glance

            Climb all stairways of life
            Climbing
           Climbing
            Why climb all stairways
            peeking down every corridor?
            Why?
            Why?
                                To get to the top

Flyin' blind . . .

Hopin' to find you
Hopin' to find myself

Still stuck on you

There'd be no need
to find
my way back home

Stop this wonderin'
all alone

A pat hand . . .
A chance for

I know you've decided
you cannot play
Yet I can't stop . . .
for now I've found no way.

And when you weight
my heart and mind,
I smile without will
and cry without time . . .
knowing
that your lips
were mine

Then, seek a Poet who your way do's bend,
And chuse an Author as you
chuse a friend.

You grow Familiar, Intimate, And Fond;
Your thoughts your Words, your

Excerpt from The Frogs
by Aristophanes

Dionysus
Leaves without fruit; trills in the empty air,
And starling chatter, mutilating art!
Give them one chance and that's the end of them,
One weak assault on an unprotected Muse.
Search as you will, you'll find no poet now
With grit in him, to wake a word of power.

Heracles

How "grit?"

Dionysus

The grit that gives them heart to risk
Bold things--vast Ether, residence of God
Or Time's long foot, or souls that won't take oaths
While tongues go swearing falsely by themselves

Heracles

You like that stuff?

Dionysus

Like it?  I rave about it.

Heracles (reflecting)

Why, yes; it's devilish tricky, as you say.

Dionysus

"Ride not upon my soul!"  Use your own donkey.

Heracles (apologising)

I only meant it was obviously humbug!

Dionysus

If ever I need advice about a dinner,
I'll come to you!

Now, Night, who stayed your course
To speed my plans, depart; give place to day,
That men may have its bright and shining light;
And by how much this night was longer than
The last, by so much shall the day that dawns
Be shorter; so there'll be equality,
And night succeed to day even as it's wont.
