I am a member of halau Na Mamo No`eau / Drumbeat of Aloha - it is a pastime, a passion, and a personal high. I take hula and Tahitian, with a sprinkling of Maori, Samoan, and Tongan. I even wrote my personal statement for UC entrance on hula. Call it an obsession, but it's certainly a healthy one.
It feels odd to be only two months away from leaving for college. Dance has been my sanctuary for the past seven years...I've made some of my best friends in the halau. No matter how much comes to pass, I know that I will always come back.
On October 19th, we are putting on "E Kokua Kakou" (Let's Help), a benefit concert for our hula sister, Jenni Minglana. Please go to our website and visit the "Events" section to learn more about ticketing and times.
In August, we put on our Rossmoor Lu`au, sponsored by the Hawai`i State Club. It was a huge time commitment, but the end result was very much worth it. Our webpage will soon be updated with pictures, so please check back soon... (Here's one of my favorite shots! No, I am not telling which one is me...guess...)
Last November we competed in the Ia `Oe E Ka La Hula Festival in Pleasanton, CA...our Gracious Ladies soloist took 2nd!
In March of 2001, we competed at the Kiki Raina Tahiti Fête, where we placed 3rd in ote`a and 4th in aparima. See our pics on our website : )
