Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944) gave us this delightful view of Russian life in happier times. Perhaps the famous "Song of the Volga Boatmen" was the basis of this work. Kandinsky was born in Moscow, but spent his childhood in Italy and visited in the U.S. Later he returned to Russia and painted and taught art there. He invented lyrical non-objective art, the idea of which was that painting should produce works similar to music, completely non-objective and not reflecting reality.
