Palmerston North Electric Power Station Inc.
British Polar engine No. 216
This engine is located at the southern (Napier Road) end of the building. It is the one we use most often for start-ups as the other one required hard physical work on the pump on the part of someone (or many people!) in order to get it operational. These photos were taken in 1997, when we had just begun work on the project. The white lines showing on the floor on the middle photo more or less give an indication of where two of the three original suction gas engines were. Their engine beds and metal plates associated with them are still present.
Normally the tops of the engines are covered with canvas sheeting when they are not in use. These were to help prevent heat loss, however, nowadays the heaters are only turned on when a start-up is shortly to occur.
