Knights Captains
The Knights Captains
Mark Sargent, Tony Butterfield, Michael Hagan, Paul Harragon. Missing Stewart and Johns.

Sam Stewart (1988-90)
Stewart led the Knights into their first Winfield Cup battle, against Parramatta at home on March 5, 1988, and held on to the reins until the second game of 1990.  His experience as a New Zealand International and his fearless charges into the ruck made him an inspirational leader as the Knights took their first steps.

Michael Hagan (1990-93)
Hagan joined the Knights in 1989.  Hagan played for 5 seasons with the Knights playing 111 first grade games.  Taking over the captaincy from Sam Stewart the following season.  In his five years as a Knights players, Hagan never missed a game through injury and played all of his 111 games for the club in first grade.  As a players, Hagan was coached by all four former Knights mentors.

Mark Sargent (1994-95)
Sargent is the current football manager for the Knights heading up the club's football operations. Sargent succeeded Hagan as Knights captain in 1994. Knights supporters will remember Sargeant as the first Knights International and Rothmans Medallist.

Paul Harragon (1995-99)
Harragon is a veteran of 169 first grade games for the Knights, 20 State of Origin appearances for NSW and 17 Australian Test caps.  Harragon was born and bred in the Hunter, as was an original member of the Newcastle Knights Football Club, signing on as a rangy winger in 1988.

Tony Butterfield (1999- 2000)
Butterfield joined the Knights in 1988, and took over the captaincy role after Paul Harragon retired. Representing City in 1989  and NSW in 1998.  Currently holds the record for most first grade games for the Knights (227),  231 First Grade  games.

Andrew Johns (2001 - 2006)
has rewritten rugby leagues record books, redefining the job description of the position he plays and establishing himself as arguably the greatest foorballer to have played the game - in any position, of any era. Andrew Johns is seen as the heart and soul of the Newcastle Knights. His elevation to the Test captaincy in 2002 was a fitting reward for his status in the game. Johns now captains his club, State and country and has a CV which includes two premierships, a Clive Churchill Medal, three Dally M medals, two Golden Boot trophies as the worlds best player.

Danny Buderus (2007 - )
Buderus, who captains NSW and has skippered Australia, was overlooked during this year's finals because of his poor on-field relationship with referees but would be proud to captain the Knights on a regular basis if selected. "It's not an issue for me," he said. "It hasn't even been spoken about, so I'm sure we'll look at that closer to February when Brian decides what he wants to do, whether it's a group of players or just one bloke."
